Class 8 Science is a bridge year. It is the last point at which a student can carry a habit of memorising definitions without being punished for it, and the first point at which Physics starts demanding numerical method and Chemistry starts demanding symbols. Nothing in the school calendar forces the issue, so most families only discover the gap in Class 9, when the same habits stop producing marks.

The three strands pull apart this year
Up to Class 7, Science reads as one subject and a student with a good memory copes across all of it. In Class 8 the three strands start behaving differently. Physics begins asking for calculation and unit handling. Chemistry begins asking for symbols, formulae and the idea that a reaction is a rearrangement rather than a story. Biology keeps rewarding recall, but adds labelled diagrams that are marked on the labels.
The practical consequence is that a single Science mark stops being informative. A student sitting at 70 per cent may be at 90 in Biology and 45 in Physics, and the report card will not say so. Which strand is weak matters more in Class 8 than the overall figure does, and it is the first thing worth establishing.
Teach from the book the school actually issued
NCERT has been revising its Science textbooks class by class over recent sessions, so Class 8 students in different Dwarka schools — and sometimes in the same school in different years — are not all working from the same edition. Any tutor worth engaging teaches from the book your child was given this year, together with the school’s own worksheets and notes, rather than from a syllabus they remember from earlier batches. It is worth checking this in the first session, and it is worth having the book on the table when you do.
What a Class 8 Science tutor should actually be building
- Numerical method. Writing the formula, substituting with units, then solving — as a habit, before Class 9 makes it worth marks.
- Diagram discipline. Ruled label lines, correct spelling on labels, and the standard version of each diagram rather than an approximation.
- Precise definitions. Class 8 tolerates “roughly right”. From Class 9 the marking scheme does not.
- Explaining, not reciting. The reliable test is asking the student to say why, in their own words, without the book open.
- Activity work taken seriously. The textbook activities are where the concepts are meant to land, and they are usually the first thing skipped when a term runs late.
The Class 9 jump is the real subject of Class 8 tuition. Class 9 splits Science into recognisably separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology work, adds a marked practical component, and assumes numerical fluency that Class 8 was supposed to build. A year spent closing gaps in Class 8 is considerably cheaper in effort than a year spent catching up in Class 9 with board pressure already in the room.
How sessions run
The first session is diagnostic rather than instructional. The tutor works through recent school assessments with the student, strand by strand, to find where marks are actually being lost — concept, method, presentation or carelessness are four different problems with four different fixes, and they are routinely treated as one.
After that the pattern is concept, worked example, then supervised practice while the tutor watches the student write. Watching matters more than it sounds: skipped steps, missing units and half-remembered diagrams are visible while a student works and invisible in a finished answer that happens to reach the right number.
What to have ready when you call
- The school and the current Science textbook edition, if you know it.
- The last two Science assessments, marked.
- Which of the three strands feels hardest to the student — ask them, not the report card.
- The two or three weekly slots that would genuinely work.

It can, and it commonly does — which is why Class 9 is the year most families first call. The habits Class 9 assumes are the ones Class 8 is meant to build, so starting a year late means building them and covering Class 9 at the same time.
My child scores well in Science but badly in Physics questions. Why?
Because the combined mark hides the split. Biology recall can carry a Class 8 Science score while Physics numericals quietly fall behind. It is worth marking the three strands separately to see the real picture.
Do you follow the school syllabus or NCERT?
The school’s, using the textbook and worksheets your child was actually issued. Where the school follows NCERT directly, that is the same thing; where it adds its own material, that material is what the exams are set from.
Is one session a week enough for Class 8 Science?
Often yes, if the student is broadly on track and the aim is to keep them there. Two is more realistic where a specific strand has already fallen behind and needs closing before Class 9.
Can Class 8 Science be taught online?
Yes. Theory, numericals and diagram work all transfer well at this level with a shared whiteboard. Some families still prefer home sessions at this age for the routine, which is a fair reason.
