Chemistry answers are marked in pieces, and several of those pieces are presentational: the balanced equation, the condition above the arrow, the unit carried through, the formula stated before substitution. None of them require knowing more chemistry, and together they account for a meaningful share of the paper.

The specific things that carry marks
- Equations balanced, with state symbols where the question expects them.
- Conditions above the arrow — temperature, catalyst, solvent. These are marked and are routinely omitted.
- The formula stated before substitution in every numerical.
- Units carried through the calculation, not appended at the end.
- Definitions written precisely, since the mark is for a specific phrase rather than the general idea.
- Structures drawn unambiguously, large enough that bonds can be assigned.
These are available to every student equally. A student in the fifties who claims all of them will out-score a student in the seventies who does not — and unlike content, presentation can be fixed in a fortnight regardless of how far behind the student is on the syllabus.
Why students give them away
Because nobody marked them strictly. A student whose written work has only ever been discussed rather than marked has no way of knowing that the missing condition cost anything. They believe they answered the question, and by their own standard they did.
The first strictly marked paper is usually a genuine shock, and that shock is the mechanism by which the habit changes.
What changes under time pressure
Presentation collapses as the clock runs down, which means the last questions attempted — often the higher-mark ones — are written most thinly. That is exactly backwards, and it is a specific, rehearsable exam decision: when time is short, write the formula and the substitution and leave the arithmetic rather than attempting the whole thing mentally.
How to fix it
Two weeks of every written answer marked strictly, with the presentation losses tallied separately from the content losses. Students who see the two columns side by side generally change the habit without further persuasion.
Keeping the tally running for a month is better still. The presentation column should shrink visibly while the content column stays roughly where it was, and that separation is the clearest evidence a student will ever get that the two are different problems with different fixes.
