Chemistry Numericals: Showing the Working That Carries the Marks

A right answer with no working scores badly, and a wrong answer with correct method scores well.

Chemistry numericals are marked in pieces — formula, substitution, manipulation, answer with units. A student who computes in their head and writes only the result forfeits most of the credit even when correct, and gets nothing at all when a small arithmetic slip occurs. The working is not tidiness; it is where the marks live and it is insurance.

The four lines to write every time

  • The formula, stated, before any numbers appear.
  • The substitution, with units included rather than added later.
  • At least one intermediate line of manipulation, not jumped.
  • The answer, with units and sensible significant figures.

The insurance argument persuades students where the marking argument does not. If the arithmetic goes wrong at the final step, a student who wrote the four lines keeps most of the marks; one who wrote only the number keeps none. Framed as protection rather than as neatness, the habit installs quickly.

Units catch errors nothing else will

Carrying units through the calculation is a free self-check — if the units do not resolve to the expected quantity, something has gone wrong before the answer appears. Students who append the unit at the end as a label have given up that check.

In chemistry specifically, unit and prefix errors are among the most common numerical failures — moles against millimoles, litres against millilitres — and carrying units catches most of them.

Where numericals appear

Mole concept and stoichiometry, solutions and concentration, thermodynamics, equilibrium, kinetics and electrochemistry. That is a substantial portion of both years, and the same four-line discipline applies to all of them.

Which means a fortnight spent installing the habit pays across the whole subject rather than in one chapter.

The habit also survives the year better than content does. A student who learned to write four lines in September is still writing them in February, whereas a chapter revised in September will have decayed. That durability is a reason to install presentation discipline early rather than treating it as something to tidy up before the boards.

How to install it

Mark practice numericals on the four lines separately from marking them on correctness. Showing a student a right answer scoring poorly, once, generally does more than repeated instruction.

The reverse demonstration is worth doing too. Take a numerical where the arithmetic went wrong and mark it properly, showing how much credit survived because the formula and substitution were written. Students who see both cases understand that the working is not a tax on their time but the thing protecting their marks.
