ISC Class 12 Maths: the Sections Students Underprepare
The optional sections carry real marks and are treated as an afterthought.

ISC Class 12 mathematics includes sections beyond the core that students often leave until late, and the applied sections in particular are usually the most efficiently scoring part of the paper for the effort involved. Deciding which to prepare — and deciding early rather than in January — is worth several marks.

Decide early which sections you are taking
The choice of optional section should be made near the start of the year and then prepared properly, rather than left open and prepared thinly across two possibilities. Students who hedge end up with partial coverage of both and full command of neither.
The decision is worth making with the school, since teaching support may be stronger for one option than the other, and that matters more than an abstract judgement about which is easier.
Check the current ISC syllabus for your child’s session rather than relying on an older one. Section structures and options are revised periodically, and preparing to a superseded structure is an avoidable way to lose marks. The school will have the current document.
Why the applied sections score well
They tend to be more procedural than the core calculus — the question types repeat, the methods are mechanical, and the marks are reliable for a student who has practised them. That combination makes them efficient, particularly for a student who finds pure mathematics harder.
They are also the part most likely to be rushed, precisely because they sit outside the core and feel optional in a way they are not.
The core, and the ISC emphasis within it
- Calculus dominates, as it does under CBSE, but with more expectation of written justification.
- Proof-style questions want the reasoning laid out rather than asserted.
- Longer multi-part questions change the pacing strategy — practise whole papers, not fragments.
- Presentation and step marks apply exactly as they do under CBSE.
Practising to the right paper
ISC past papers, specifically, and marked to the ISC scheme. A student practising on CBSE papers because they are easier to find is training for a different exam — the mathematics transfers and the expected answer does not.
Where ISC papers are genuinely scarce, the next best thing is to have every answer marked against the ISC scheme even when the question came from elsewhere. It is the marking that trains the output, and the marking is available separately from the questions.

Early in Class 12, so the chosen section gets a full year rather than a term.
Are the applied sections easier?

Can a CBSE-experienced tutor teach ISC?
Only if they know the ISC scheme. Ask directly — the mathematics is the same and the marking is not.
