Titration in the Board Practical: the Errors Examiners Look For

A technique exam as much as a chemistry one, and the technique faults are a short, known list.

Titration marks are lost to a small set of repeatable technique errors — rinsing wrongly, reading the meniscus badly, overshooting the endpoint, and recording readings that are suspiciously identical. Each is visible to an examiner watching, each is correctable with practice, and none of them require better chemistry.

The technique errors that get noticed

  • Rinsing the burette with water instead of the solution it will hold. Dilutes the titrant and changes every reading. A classic and heavily penalised error.
  • Reading the meniscus from the wrong eye level, producing a consistent parallax error across all readings.
  • Overshooting the endpoint because the tap is opened too far near the end. The last few drops should go in one at a time with swirling.
  • Not swirling, so the reaction is incomplete when the colour changes.
  • Air bubble left in the burette tip, which appears as a sudden jump in volume.

Concordant readings that are too concordant look wrong. Three titrations agreeing to the last drop, every time, reads as invented rather than careful. Real technique produces small variation and a mean taken honestly across it. Examiners have seen a great many titration records.

The calculation and record

The calculation carries marks separately from the technique, and the usual losses there are familiar: formula not stated, working compressed, units dropped, and the final answer given to an inappropriate number of significant figures.

The observation table should be ruled, with initial and final readings, volume used, and the concordant readings identified before the mean is taken.

The viva that follows

Expect to be asked why a particular indicator was chosen, what the colour change signifies, why the flask is rinsed with water but the burette is not, and what would happen if a step were done differently. All of these are answerable by a student who understood what they were doing rather than following steps.

How to prepare

Perform titrations repeatedly and record them in full each time. This is the clearest example in school chemistry of a skill that cannot be learned from a book — the hand technique and the endpoint judgement come only from doing it.

What a tutor can do between lab sessions is the calculation and the record. Working through the molarity arithmetic until it is automatic, and writing the observation table in the exam format, removes two of the four things being assessed from the pressure of the practical exam itself. That leaves the student concentrating on technique on the day.

Yes, and the examiner is watching the procedure as well as marking the result.

Why rinse the burette with the solution?

Because residual water dilutes the titrant and shifts every reading. It is also a very common viva question.

How many titrations should be done in practice?

Enough that the endpoint judgement is confident — usually several sessions rather than one.
